No, we’re not going to explain to you where to put your wallet and no, we’re not going to tell you anything about the flowers and the bees either. But now that festival season is well underway, we do need to talk about an important topic: hearing damage (and how to prevent it). So are you going to a festival soon? Then read this article carefully!
The volume at a festival
In 2018, a covenant stipulates that noise levels at concerts and clubs must not exceed 103 dB for 15 consecutive minutes. That in itself is dubious, as direct hearing damage can occur from 100 dB. In addition, many festivals peak at over 120 dB, which is a guarantee for a visit to the audiologist. Be careful!
The well-known beep
What a great festival it was! And then you get up the next morning and there it is: the beep. Many people know it but hey… It will pass and it was worth it, right? Or maybe not? You see, that beep is just hearing damage, and that means you get hearing loss. So you become hard of hearing earlier in life. And what if that squeak doesn’t go away at all, and you keep tinnitus forever? Was that really worth it?
Hearing protection at your festival
Earplugs may have been “uncool” in the past, but nowadays they are a must at festivals and concerts. There are countless hearing protectors with special filters, which do attenuate but also ensure that you can still hear the music and understand your friends. Almost all of them are hardly visible, but they do protect you from permanent hearing damage.
SNR
SNR stands for Single Number Rating and indicates the number of decibels you can “subtract” from the sound level. The SNR is indicated on the packaging of your hearing protection. If the sound level is 100 dB and you have earplugs with an SNR of 25, that leaves (a safe) 75 dB.
